Cabins You Can Walk to a Waterfall From in Hocking Hills

April 21, 2026 · 6 min read · Trip Planning

One of the most common questions about Hocking Hills rentals — and one of the hardest to answer from a listing page — is how close you'll actually be to the trails and waterfalls. "Minutes from Old Man's Cave" can mean 5 minutes or 25 minutes depending on who's writing the listing. Here's a proximity-focused breakdown of properties that are genuinely close to waterfalls.

What "Walking Distance" Means in Hocking Hills

True walking distance — as in, you can leave your cabin on foot, walk a trail or road, and reach a waterfall without driving — is rare. The state park trailheads have parking lots for a reason: most visitors drive from their accommodation. But a handful of properties are close enough that you can hike directly from the cabin to a trailhead or even have a waterfall on the property itself.

For most rentals, "close to a waterfall" realistically means a 5–15 minute drive to a trailhead. That's still excellent. The entire Hocking Hills State Park corridor along SR-664 South is compact enough that everything is within a 20-minute drive of everything else.

Closest Cabins to Major Trailheads

Near Old Man's Cave (Upper and Lower Falls)

Properties on SR-664 South between Grandma Faye's Grocery and the Old Man's Cave Visitor Center are the closest you can get. Several cabin operators in this stretch are within a 2–5 minute drive of the main trailhead parking lot. A few properties on adjoining roads back up to the state park boundary, though you'll still need to access official trails from the designated trailheads.

Near Cedar Falls

The Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls is surrounded on three sides by the state park, with Cedar Falls and Rose Lake trails within a half-mile. Their cabins, yurts, geodomes, and cottages offer the closest lodging to Cedar Falls of any provider in the region. This is the only property where "walk to a waterfall" is literally accurate for some of their units.

Near Ash Cave

Properties along SR-56 near South Bloomingville put you within 5–10 minutes of Ash Cave's parking area. The trail from the parking lot to the cave floor is a flat, paved 0.25-mile walk — the most accessible in the entire park system. Cherry Ridge Retreat in nearby New Plymouth is about 15 minutes from Ash Cave.

Near Cantwell Cliffs

The Cabin at Cantwell Cliffs sits on 40 forested acres with rock cliff views and is one of the closest private rentals to the Cantwell Cliffs trailhead. This area is less developed and less crowded than the Old Man's Cave corridor, which many hikers consider an advantage.

Properties with On-Site Water Features

A few properties have their own streams, cascades, or water features on the grounds. These aren't state park waterfalls, but waking up to the sound of running water on your own property is a real draw. Look for listings that mention "creek on property," "private waterfall," or "stream views." Some of the larger acreage properties (50+ acres) have seasonal cascades that flow after rain.

Seasonal factor: Hocking Hills waterfalls are at their most impressive in spring (March through May) when rain and snowmelt feed the streams. By late summer in a dry year, some falls slow to a trickle. If waterfalls are the reason for your trip, book for spring.

Drive-Time Cheat Sheet

From the SR-664 South cabin corridor (near Old Man's Cave) to other major sites:

The takeaway: even if your cabin isn't "walking distance" to a waterfall, you're never more than a short drive away. The region is compact, and the real advantage of staying in the Hocking Hills versus day-tripping from Columbus is that you can hit multiple trailheads across multiple days without any drive exceeding 20 minutes.
