The Weekend After Halloween Is the Best-Kept Secret in Hocking Hills Rentals

Every October weekend in Hocking Hills is a fight — for cabins, for parking, for a spot on the Old Man's Cave stairs. Then Halloween ends, the clocks fall back, and the region exhales. The first full weekend of November has the same cabins, the same fire pits, and the same trails as October 24, at prices that make you wonder why you didn't wait.

What changes on November 1

Three things, all at once. The foliage crowd leaves — peak passed in the gorges around October 25 and the day-trip traffic from Columbus drops with it. The Halloween groups go home after the Saturday holiday. And daylight saving time ends, so sunset drops to 5:28 p.m. and the region shifts into its evening-at-the-cabin rhythm. Operators know their calendars empty out; many drop rates for the first November weekends, and minimum stays relax from three nights back to two or even one.

What you actually get

• Late color. The maples are done, but the oaks hold rust and bronze into early November, especially in the sheltered lower gorges. The forest floor is a full carpet. With the canopy thinning, more light reaches the gorge floor at Old Man's Cave and Cedar Falls than at any point in October — the rock formations look bigger and the photos are different, not worse.
• Empty trails. The Sunday-morning solitude that takes planning in October is the default in November. The Old Man's Cave lot that overflowed at 10:30 a.m. on October 17 has spaces at noon.
• Long evenings. Dark by 5:30 means the fire pit is lit by 6 and the hot tub is the main event by 8. This is the version of Hocking Hills the region's operators built the cabins for.

Where the deals are

The properties that were peak-priced in October and are now soft: the mid-size hot-tub cabins near Old Man's Cave (still the most in-demand category, but no longer a fight), the gorge-view properties whose view is now unobstructed by leaves, and the large lodges that sat on three-night group minimums through October. Price differences of a third or more between the last Saturday of October and the first Saturday of November are normal on comparable properties; the price comparison shows the seasonal curve.

What's still open in town

Logan's restaurants, the breweries and wineries, and the park visitor center run year-round. The Logan Farmers Market wraps up October 31. John Glenn Astronomy Park's free public programs run Friday and Saturday nights through November, and with the early sunset the sky is fully dark by 6:30 — the November new moon falls around the 8th–9th, so the 6–8 weekend has only a thin crescent that sets early and leaves the sky dark. The Hocking Valley Scenic Railway's foliage trains are done; its holiday trains start later in the season.

The pitch

If you want peak leaves, book October and pay for it.
