Dark Sky Season

Stargazing Season in Hocking Hills

Luxury rentals with dark sky views for every meteor shower of 2026.

Lyrids Peak This Week — April 21–22

The first meteor shower of the season arrives Tuesday night. A slim crescent moon sets early, leaving dark, clear skies after midnight. Expect 15–18 meteors per hour from your deck — no telescope needed.

The Showers Worth Booking For

Most meteor showers happen whether the conditions are right or not. But in 2026, two of the year's biggest displays align with nearly moonless skies — a rare combination that makes this a standout year for stargazing getaways in Hocking Hills. Here are the dates to build a trip around.

Perseids — August 12–13

100+ meteors per hour · New moon · Perfect conditions

The Perseids under a new moon is the kind of night you remember. Over 100 meteors per hour, warm summer air, a hot tub on a private deck, and not a single streetlight for miles. Bright fireballs streak across the sky every few minutes. This is the premier stargazing event of the year, and Hocking Hills' dark skies make it unforgettable. Book a property with an open southern view for the best experience.

Geminids — December 13–14

150 meteors per hour · 21% crescent · Near-perfect

The biggest meteor shower of the year. The Geminids produce up to 150 bright, colorful streaks per hour, and unlike most showers, peak activity begins before midnight — no alarm clock required. A December weekend in a Hocking Hills cabin with a fireplace, a hot tub, and 150 shooting stars overhead is the kind of experience that feels engineered for romance.

Lyrids — April 21–22 (This Week)

~18 meteors per hour · 27% moon (sets early) · Good conditions

Spring in the hills. Cool nights, budding canopy, and the first shower after a long winter drought. The Lyrids are modest in scale but arrive when the region is quiet and peaceful. Grab a last-minute midweek stay and catch the show from your deck.

Northern Taurids — November ~12

~5 per hour but bright fireballs · New moon · Good for fireballs

The Taurids trade volume for spectacle. Only a handful per hour, but the meteors are slow-moving fireballs that light up the sky. Under a new moon with fall's last colors on the hillsides, this is a quiet, cinematic weekend getaway.
