November 2026 is the best Taurid meteor shower viewing window in a decade, and Hocking Hills has the dark skies and secluded properties to make the most of it. The Northern Taurids peak November 11–12 under a 7% illuminated moon — essentially pitch-black skies — and the Taurids are famous for slow, bright fireballs that light up the entire sky. Watching from a hot tub on a private deck is the correct way to do this.
Why 2026 Is Special
Two Taurid branches overlap in late October and early November: the Southern Taurids (peaking around November 5) and the Northern Taurids (peaking November 11–12). The new moon falls on November 9, 2026, placing both peaks under the darkest possible skies. The combined rate is modest — about 10 meteors per hour — but Taurid meteors are slow-moving and disproportionately likely to produce fireballs: bright, dramatic streaks that can cast shadows on the ground.
What Makes a Dark-Sky Rental
Location, location, light pollution: Properties south and east of the state park, away from Logan and Lancaster, tend to have the darkest skies. The Rockbridge, Zaleski, and Lake Hope areas are ideal. Properties on dead-end roads with no neighboring cabins visible are the gold standard.
Minimal property lighting: Many luxury rentals have extensive landscape lighting that defeats the purpose. Look for properties that specifically mention dark-sky features or "no light pollution." Some thoughtful property owners install warm, dimmable exterior lights or motion-sensor lights that stay off during stargazing.
Open sky from the hot tub: The hot tub needs an unobstructed view of the southern sky. Taurid meteors radiate from the constellation Taurus, which is highest around midnight. A hot tub under a tree canopy or covered patio won't work for meteor watching — you need open sky overhead.

About a mile from Old Man's Cave, JGAP is a free dark-sky facility with a 28-inch telescope. Public programs run most Friday and Saturday nights through late November. It's worth visiting even if your rental has great sky views — the telescope reveals details that naked-eye stargazing can't touch.
November Value
November rates in Hocking Hills are well below peak-season pricing. Properties that command $400–$600/night in October may be available for $200–$350 in November. The fall color is largely past peak but the gorges often hold late bronze and rust tones, the trails are quiet, and the crisp air makes hot tub time and fireplace evenings even better. It's one of the best value windows of the year for a luxury rental.
