A-frames fit Hocking Hills unusually well. The steep roof sheds rain and snow, the tall glass front pulls the forest into the living room, and a small footprint can still create a dramatic interior. But “A-frame” now covers everything from vintage four-person chalets to 1,800-square-foot design cabins with saunas and three bathrooms.

Classic vs. modern A-frame

The original appeal is compactness. Traditional A-frames put the living area beneath a soaring roof, with a loft above and glass at the front. They photograph beautifully but can sacrifice straight-wall storage, bedroom privacy and headroom at the edges.

Newer Hocking Hills A-frames increasingly use walk-out basements, multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, decks, saunas and full chef kitchens. At that point, “A-frame” describes the visual architecture more than the size of the cabin.

The Chalets A-frames

HockingCabins.com's current guide identifies 16 A-frame properties operated by Chalets in Hocking Hills and traces the format back to 1988. Live platform listings show the familiar formula: ridge setting, private wooded back decks, hot tubs, fireplaces and compact two-bedroom layouts that commonly sleep four.

Several current listings are pet-friendly. That combination — old-school triangle cabin, woods and hot tub — is arguably the most recognizable version of a Hocking Hills cabin trip.

Choose them for: nostalgia, smaller groups and the classic look rather than a giant luxury amenity list.

Red Roost A-frame — sleeps 6

Venture Cabins' Red Roost in Rockbridge is a cozy A-frame/cottage with a queen bedroom, sleeping loft, hot tub, gas fireplace, full kitchen, fire pit and Wi-Fi. The operator currently markets it as pet-friendly.

It is a good reminder that not every A-frame needs to be a $1,000-a-night architecture statement. The category still includes practical cabins.

The Everwoods A-Frame — sleeps 8

The Everwoods takes the classic shape and stretches it across three levels. The current operator page lists roughly 1,700–1,800 square feet, three bedrooms, three bathrooms, two living areas and an office space in the loft.

Outside, it adds private hiking trails, a Scandinavian barrel sauna, six-person hot tub, two back decks, outdoor dining and a large fire-pit area. The entire A-frame property is about 10 acres, though another Everwoods property sits on the adjacent side.

Choose it for: a group that wants genuine architectural character without giving up bathroom count.

The Benison — sleeps 8

The Benison is another modern A-frame with a very broad amenity stack: private hot tub, Level 2 EV charger, air hockey, pool table, pickleball, full kitchen, outdoor dining, fire pit and high-speed Wi-Fi.

This is the A-frame for a group that worries about rainy afternoons. The stay does not depend on being outdoors every waking hour.

Dunlap Hollow A-Frame — sleeps 10

Dunlap Hollow is the high-design end of the category. The current operator page describes seating for 10, three bedrooms plus a third-floor sleeping loft, two full bathrooms, a six-person hot tub, suspended wood-burning stove, outdoor propane fireplace and private hiking trails.

The structure is known for its huge window wall and 20 skylights. Unlike a compact A-frame with a ladder loft, this is designed as a substantial group house.

Choose it for: design-conscious groups willing to make the rental itself a centerpiece of the trip.

What A-frame photos don't tell you

Loft stairs

Some A-frames use steep stairs or ladder-like access. If grandparents, toddlers or anyone with mobility limitations is coming, ask for actual stair photos.

Bedroom privacy

A sleeping loft is not a bedroom. For two couples, “two beds” may be much less useful than two doors.

Temperature stratification

Hot air rises into the peak. Good HVAC matters in both winter and summer, especially when a loft is being used for sleeping.

Window privacy

The giant glass wall is the point — until the cabin faces another property. Look at exterior photos and map context.

A-frame or treehouse?

Choose an A-frame if you want easier access, more conventional kitchens and a social living room. Choose a treehouse when elevation and novelty are the main attraction. For families with luggage and small children, an A-frame is usually simpler.

A-frame or geodome?

A-frames generally offer stronger kitchen/bathroom infrastructure and more separation between sleeping areas. Domes deliver the more immersive “glass wall and stars from bed” experience. Couples often prefer the dome; small groups usually fit an A-frame better.

Frequently asked questions

Are Hocking Hills A-frames usable in winter?

Yes, but verify driveway access, heating and whether the hot tub remains open. Modern examples in this guide are climate-controlled and several include fireplaces or wood stoves.

Are A-frames pet-friendly?

Some are. Red Roost and multiple Chalets listings currently welcome pets, while The Everwoods lists no pets. Policies vary by individual unit.

Do all A-frames have hot tubs?

No universal rule, but every named example in this guide currently lists one.

Are they good for eight adults?

Only the larger modern builds. Check whether every listed sleeping space is a private bedroom or whether adults will be in open lofts.

The best A-frame is the one whose triangle shape adds atmosphere without forcing your group to compromise on the things it actually needs: beds, bathrooms, access and climate control.
