Staying in Logan vs. a Cabin in the Woods: Convenience or Seclusion?

October 12, 2026 · 7 min read · Planning

Choose a stay in or near Logan if you want groceries, restaurants, simple roads and an easy arrival. Choose a cabin in the woods if you want privacy, a private hot tub, a fire pit and the sounds of the forest instead of traffic. Both put you close enough to the park for a day of hiking. The question is what you want the other twenty hours to feel like.

This guide is about the stay itself, not sightseeing in town. If you are still choosing among areas, start with our area decision guide.

What "staying in Logan" really means

Logan is the Hocking County seat and the practical center of the region. Staying in or around it can mean a few things. Our guide to rentals near Logan describes three zones: in and around town, where a handful of rentals and historic houses are walkable to the downtown market and events; the Lake Logan side west and north of town; and the US-33 corridor toward Rockbridge, where larger properties and lodges have quick highway access.

That guide puts all three at roughly ten to twenty minutes from the park's trailheads, and notes that Old Man's Cave is about fifteen minutes south of Logan on SR 664. Lodging in town can also include ordinary rooms. Privacy and amenities vary a lot across rooms, houses and rentals, so read each listing carefully and do not assume it matches a cabin's features.

The case for town

Who should choose which

Choose town if you are arriving late, traveling with a mix of ages, attending events in Logan, planning a short trip, or you simply do not want to manage gravel roads and spotty signal. The October events guide lays out why an event weekend favors the Logan side.

Choose a cabin if your trip is a celebration, a romantic weekend, a reunion, or a retreat where the property is the point. A weekend built around a hot tub and a fire pit needs a property that actually has them.

Consider the middle. Some rentals on the edge of town or along US-33 give you a cabin feel with quick access to services. For a first Hocking Hills trip, that compromise suits many people. For a longer stay, you might split it, with a night in town at the start or end and the rest at a cabin.

Cost, season and weather

We do not quote prices here because they change with the season and the property. When you compare, ask each lodging for the full total including cleaning, service and pet fees, then add what the trip will really cost. A town stay can mean more meals out. A cabin usually means a grocery run and more cooking, plus a fuller kitchen to do it in. Our cabin price comparison shows how to think about where the extra money goes.

Season can tip the choice as well. In peak fall and on holiday weekends, a base close to services keeps the trip simple. In winter, the question becomes the driveway, the heat and what you will do if ice closes a trail. Our winter cabin guide and the cold snap prep guide explain what to ask. A guest who values a plowed road and a quick trip back to dinner may be happier in town in January and in the woods in May.

Questions to ask before you book either

  1. How far is the property from the grocery store and from the trail we plan to hike first?
  2. Is the final approach paved, and is it plowed or treated in winter?
  3. What are the check-in options if we arrive after dark?
  4. Are there neighbors or road noise that guests report?
  5. What amenities are private, and which are shared?

Bottom line

Convenience and seclusion are both good reasons to pick a place to stay, but they do not combine in one property. Decide which one your weekend needs, match the stay to it, and verify the distance, access and amenities in writing before you pay.

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to stay in Logan or in a cabin in the woods?

Stay in or near Logan for convenience, dining and easy arrival. Stay in a cabin for privacy, a hot tub and fire pit, and a quiet setting. It depends on what you want from the evenings.

How far is Logan from Old Man's Cave?

Our area guide puts Old Man's Cave about fifteen minutes south of Logan on SR 664. Check the drive from your exact address.

Will my phone work at a cabin?

Not always. The regional tourism site warns that mobile service is limited in the park area, so confirm coverage and Wi-Fi with the host.

Can I get a hot tub if I stay in Logan?

It depends on the lodging. Hot tubs are a headline feature of many cabins, while town lodging may have shared amenities or none, so check each listing.
