Which Side of Hocking Hills Should You Stay On? A Decision Guide
Stay near South Bloomingville if Ash Cave, Cedar Falls and quiet matter most, near Logan if groceries, restaurants and easy highway access matter most, and near Laurelville if you want a slower pace on the northwest side, close to Cantwell Cliffs and Rock House. All three put you within a short drive of the park. The right choice depends on what you will do every day, not on which name sounds closest to Old Man's Cave.
This guide compares the three bases using our own area pages, which are single-area profiles, and adds the decision framework they lack. The drive times quoted come from those guides and are approximate. Measure from the property's exact address before you book.
The short comparison
| Base | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| South Bloomingville (south) | Ash Cave and Cedar Falls at dawn, quiet, newer unique stays | Farther from full-size groceries and the widest restaurant choice |
| Logan (town side) | Groceries, dining, events, easy US-33 access | Less of the deep-woods feel |
| Laurelville (northwest) | Cantwell Cliffs and Rock House, village pace, classic cabins | Longer to the southern trails |
South Bloomingville: the quiet southern base
South Bloomingville sits at the intersection of Routes 56 and 664 and works as the southern gateway to the park. It puts you closest to Ash Cave, Cedar Falls and the southern end of the Grandma Gatewood Trail. Our guide to cabins near Ash Cave and Cedar Falls lists the options.
The advantage is timing. Ash Cave parking can fill by about 10 a.m. on peak fall weekends, so sleeping close lets you reach the trailhead early. The corner also holds many of the region's newer treehouses, domes and A-frames. The cost is distance from supplies: Logan has the last full-size grocery stores before the cabin corridor, and options south of it thin out. Shop on your way in.
Logan: the practical base
Logan is the Hocking County seat and the place where the grocery stores, restaurants and most events are. Our Logan October events guide notes that Old Man's Cave is about fifteen minutes south of town on SR 664 and that Logan-side rentals are ten to twenty minutes from the park's trailheads. Staying here keeps you off the busiest park roads on a Saturday and close to US-33, the main route from Columbus.
"Near Logan" covers three zones: in or around town, the Lake Logan side to the west and north, and the US-33 corridor toward Rockbridge. The latter has larger properties and lodges. The trade-off is atmosphere. If your trip is about waking up inside the woods, this is not that. If it is about a hot shower after dinner in town, it is ideal. For a direct comparison of town lodging and an isolated cabin, see our guide to staying in Logan versus a cabin in the woods.
Laurelville: the northwest gateway
Laurelville is a small village on Salt Creek on the northwest side of the region. Our Laurelville area guide describes it as the gateway to Cantwell Cliffs and Rock House, with fewer crowds than Old Man's Cave. Cantwell Cliffs sits at the northern edge of the Hocking Hills, and the area's rentals lean toward classic cabins and farmhouse conversions rather than domes and treehouses.
It makes sense if those two formations are your priority, or if you want a village pace. It is also the best position if you plan to drive home through Circleville on Route 56 rather than back down US-33. Rockbridge State Nature Preserve is a 15 to 20 minute drive from many Laurelville rentals. The preserve does not allow dogs.
Match the side to the trip
| Trip type | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Dawn hikes at Ash Cave and Cedar Falls | South Bloomingville | Shortest drive to the southern trailheads |
| Family weekend with kids in the car | Logan side | Short drives, groceries, restaurants |
| October events and town evenings | Logan side | Events are in and around town |
| Quiet couple's trip with a hot tub | South Bloomingville or Laurelville | More woods, fewer cars |
| Cantwell Cliffs, Rock House, Rockbridge | Laurelville | Closest to the northwest sites |
| Big group needing space | US-33 corridor near Logan | Larger properties with quick highway access |
Think about your route and your season
From Columbus, our Columbus drive guide puts the trip to Old Man's Cave at about 60 minutes in light traffic and 70 to 80 on a peak Friday afternoon or Saturday morning. From Cincinnati, the South Bloomingville guide suggests about two and a half hours. If you arrive late in the day, a base close to your route saves time, and you will want the after-dark arrival guide for gravel roads.
Season changes the answer. In peak fall, being near your first trailhead matters more. In winter, a paved approach can matter more than three fewer miles. Weekdays are also easier: our South Bloomingville guide recommends Sunday through Thursday for better inventory, lower rates and quieter trails.
The most common mistake is choosing a base for the trailhead you will visit once and ignoring the places you will drive to every day. A cabin deep in the hills is wonderful for a hiking trip and tiring for a weekend of town events, because every errand starts with a long, winding drive. Ask the question we ask in our Old Man's Cave guide: where are we driving every day? Then choose the side that shortens those trips, and accept a slightly longer drive on the day you do the one big hike.
Check the real distance before you book
- Put the property's address into a map app and check the drive to your first-choice trailhead and the nearest grocery store.
- Ask the host how far it is to the places you plan to visit, not just the one in the listing title.
- Remember that "near Old Man's Cave" is used loosely. Our verified list near Old Man's Cave shows the difference between two miles and thirty minutes.
- Ask about the driveway and cell coverage. Both vary within a few miles.
Bottom line
Pick the side that fits your daily plan. South Bloomingville for early southern trails, Logan for convenience, Laurelville for the northwest. Then confirm the drive from the exact address, because a few miles on a winding road can change the whole day.
